Family Board Advisors

For directors

The family boardroom is different. Be ready for it.

Serving on a family enterprise board is one of the most rewarding roles in governance — and one of the most misunderstood. The fiduciary duties are real. So are the dynamics no governance course covers: shareholders with the same last name, a founder who built the company from nothing, siblings with competing visions, and a CEO who may also be your host at Thanksgiving.

We work with directors on both sides of that door.

The flagship program

The Family Board Readiness Program

For experienced executives and first-time directors preparing to serve family enterprises well. Cohort-based and personal, the program covers what generic director education leaves out:

  • How family ownership structures actually shape board authority
  • The line between fiduciary duty and family loyalty — and how to walk it
  • Working with founders: influence without confrontation
  • Reading the room when the room is a family
  • Succession moments: the director's role in the hardest conversations
  • Adding value without overstepping — and exiting gracefully when the time comes

Because in a family boardroom, judgment is the job.

Format

Small cohorts, live sessions, real case work drawn from decades inside family boardrooms. Offered 2–3 times per year. One-on-one preparation available for senior executives who prefer a private engagement.

Director Positioning Advisory

One-on-one counsel for executives pursuing family enterprise board service: sharpening your board value proposition, building your governance résumé, and positioning yourself for the seats where you’ll genuinely add value.

Our director network

Completing our program connects you to a community of family-fluent directors — and to our practice.

A note on how we keep that honest: program participation never guarantees placement or preferential treatment. Our search slates are built from the full market, and when a program alumnus appears on a client slate, we say so. Families trust us because the answer to “did this candidate pay you?” is always transparent.
